A New Beginning for a Perry Point Veteran

When Paul, a veteran referred to us through the VA Hospital at Perry Point, walked into the Fresh Start Furnishings showroom, he wasn’t looking for luxury, he was looking for relief. After discovering a serious mold issue in his home, he had to get rid of his bed and several other belongings. What was left behind was a bare, unwelcoming space that felt less like a home and more like a reminder of everything he’d lost.
Paul needed a new bed, a sofa to sit on, and a set of dining chairs so he could enjoy a meal like he used to. But like so many veterans living on a fixed income, the price of basic furniture was simply out of reach. “Items like these are way too expensive,” he shared. “This program has helped me save money that I can put towards other things.”
As he walked through the showroom, Paul filled a cart with items that would bring warmth and personality back into his home. He selected small appliances to make everyday living easier, wall art and décor to brighten his space, and pillows and blankets to make everything feel inviting again. Piece by piece, he chose items that reflected the kind of home he wanted to rebuild: one rooted in comfort, dignity, and stability.
What makes Paul’s story even more meaningful is that this wasn’t his first time visiting Fresh Start Furnishings. Months earlier, he came with another veteran to help transport furniture to a friend in need. Even before he knew he would need help himself, he was already paying it forward, showing up, serving, and standing by those who walked the same path he once did.
Today, Paul is looking forward to setting up his home again, this time with gratitude and renewed hope. He says he is thankful to his Lord and Savior for answering his prayers and he sees this support as part of that blessing.
Veterans like Paul remind us why our mission matters. A furnished home is more than just a place to sleep or sit. It’s a foundation and a space where healing can happen, where pride can be restored, and where life can begin again.
Thank you, Paul, for your service, for your heart, and for inspiring us with your resilience.
